Fourteen-year-old orphaned twins Grace and Connor Tempest are together again aboard the pirate ship Diablo, but when an attack goes wrong and one of Connor's best friends is killed, Grace wants to find a way to keep her brother safe. Invited to spend a week at the Pirate Academy, Connor thrives, but Grace yearns for the life she knew among the vampirates--especially Lorcan, who blinded himself seeing to her safety. A ring he gave her allows her to walk the decks of the vampirates' ship through astral projection. Even though this is the second in the Vampirates series, following Demons of the Ocean (2006), it is easy to pick up the threads of the story, which sets plucky young people against Pirate Federation intrigue and the evil, renegade vampirates. This provides more of the swashbuckling action and horror-tinged fantasy that characterizes the series, which offers lots of appeal for reluctant readers. --Diana Herald Copyright 2007 Booklist

Once again readers can turn to their favorite series and characters as they return in a slew of sequels. PW called Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean by Justin Somper "a gleefully quick read." In Vampirates: Tide of Terror, siblings Grace and Conner are in danger once again as they discover that a deadly traitor is aboard the Diablo. When Grace learns about the elite Pirate Academy where her brother might learn the art of pirating without losing his life, the two must decide whether they will remain on the high seas or retreat into a classroom. Gr 5-9-This sequel to Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean (Little, Brown, 2006) continues after Grace joins her twin brother, Connor, onboard The Diablo, where they learn additional pirate skills. Visions of the Vampirate ship haunt Grace and she misses Lorcan, her rescuer there. She sees him in her dreams, blind and sick, and knows she must help to save him, but she doesn't know how to reach the ship. After the death of one of his best mates, Connor makes a trip to the Pirate Academy and begins to wonder if he wants to remain under Captain Wrathe or become captain of his own ship. Grace accompanies him to the academy. Connor is betrayed in a swordfight with a fellow classmate and leaves the academy rather than be pushed into the plans of Cheng Li and Commander Kuo. Grace finds her way back to Lorcan, who is wasting away by refusing to take the blood of his human donor. Piratical politics and the threat of a crew of wayward Vampirates headed by Sidorio, who was kicked off the ship in the first book, plague the seas. It is not necessary to read the first book to enjoy the second, but the story arc does move across the planned trilogy, leaving things unresolved in this volume. This easy-to-read novel moves along quickly with plenty of action, fantasy, and adventure.-Corinda J. Humphrey, Los Angeles Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Twins Grace and Connor escaped the Vampirate ship in this series's first book, and Connor's now dismayed that Grace feels compelled to return. However, Connor has more to worry about as he's forced to decide between the lure of seafaring and the prestigious Pirate Academy. The plot isn't as exciting as the first book's but ably sets up the next installment. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
